Search For The Needle Chapter 1 Walkthrough — Find Your First Needle
Chapter 1 of Search For The Needle explained: search the hay, learn the tools, find the needle and beat your best time.
Search For The Needle opens with its namesake task: a giant pile of hay, one needle hiding somewhere inside it, and a timer quietly watching how long you take. Chapter 1 teaches the loop the whole game runs on — search the hay, sell the hay, buy upgrades, find the needle — and finishing it unlocks everything else, from classes to the basement. This walkthrough covers the loop, the tools you meet, and how to post a first time worth beating.

What is the goal of Chapter 1?
Chapter 1 asks you to find the needle in the haystack — the game’s own description calls it “a chill cozy game about finding a Needle in a giant pile of Hay”. You clear hay to expose the pile’s secrets, sell what you gather for currency, spend that on better tools, and search until the needle turns up. Finding it for the first time awards the Found the Needle! badge, and the game immediately frames your next goal: beat your best time.
The chapter doubles as the tutorial. Every core system — searching, selling, upgrading, timing — appears here in its simplest form before later chapters stack puzzles on top of it.
How does searching the hay work?
You walk up to hay and interact with it to search through, clearing it away piece by piece. The magnifying-glass moments are the heart of the game: every cleared patch brings the needle closer to sight. Early on you clear hay by hand, which is slow but enough — the pile is generous, and every handful you clear can be sold.
Two things speed this up:
- Tools. Better tools clear more hay per action. The tools and upgrades guide ranks all five.
- Classes. A lucky class roll improves your efficiency before you even start. See the class list.
What tools do I get in Chapter 1?
Chapter 1 introduces the tool ladder: Hand, Pitchfork, Dynamite, Vacuum and Hay Drone, in roughly that order of power. The Hand is where everyone starts — slow, satisfying, free. Each upgrade multiplies how much hay you move per pass, and the drone tier eventually does the searching for you.
The money to buy them comes from selling the hay you clear. That sell-upgrade-sell-faster loop is the engine of the whole chapter: the better your tools, the faster the pile shrinks, the sooner the needle shows itself.
How do I find the needle faster?
Clear systematically rather than wandering — pick a corner and work across the pile in lanes, so no patch gets searched twice. Sell in bulk between passes rather than interrupting every handful. And put your free Gems from codes into an early class reroll if your starting roll is weak.
The needle’s location is the pile’s secret, so speed comes from efficiency, not memorization. Your best-time clock — the PR timer the game keeps on your runs — is the score you are chasing for the rest of the game, and the speedrun guide covers the techniques players use to push it down.
What happens when I find the needle?
Finding the needle in Chapter 1 grants the Found the Needle! badge and closes out the game’s opening act. From there the wider game opens up: harder chapters with their own twists, the class system, pets and skins, and the locked basement door you may have already walked past. Chapter 2 — the Halloween-themed puzzle chapter — is where the game stops being purely about speed and starts testing your head too. The Chapter 2 walkthrough picks up from here.
